Building a stand for the Smithy

Seeking opinions on setting up a bench/stand/support for the Smithy. What is the best height for the support structure under one of these 3n1's? I am average height at 5'9" (or 175cm.)

What does your bench/table/stand measure? Is there a general rule where the chuck should be in relation to ones waist or elbow for good ergonomics? Since the head is able to rotate, I am not too concerned about it being too low; but so many people have commented on hitting their head, I may be missing...

buying advice for Smithy 1220XL 3 in 1

Saw this on sale. Wanted to know your thoughts on if I should consider buying it. I'm limited on space. I'd consider a 3 in 1 but have never used one. I'm teaching Engineering at a local high school and would like a machine for home use so I can create projects at home and on weekends. This will prevent me from having to stay late during the school year or come in over summer. I have access to bigger machines at work, but I'm mostly going to make small stuff.

Is this a decent 3 in 1 and is...

Good morning and Happy Thanksgiving!! My dad and I just purchased a used Shoptask 1720 xmtc gold last night. When we were looking it over there is a lot of slop in it and it was not kept very clean. This weekend I plan to spend several hours cleaning all of the rails and getting it back into better shape. However, I am wondering how to take the slop out of it. When you turn the knobs to adjust it the front will move before 1/8" before the back starts to move. I do not know much about milling...

Hi all. New member here and novice looking for advice on tooling for what I believe is a Central Machinery LH009 I picked up for a song and a dance.
I would like to start with soft metal and wood milling to practice. The machine came with a large set of brand new end mills but no collets, holders, drawbars, etc.
Can anybody advise me on what I would need for a basic setup - drawbar length, collet types and sizes and collet holders?
I assume this machine requires a specific length of...

Hello Everyone

Just joined a few weeks ago and have not had time to post anything. Now that I’m off until 1-4-19 I have the time now. First I will say I’m no Machinist, I’m an Electrician by trade but, I always have been interested in maching. I am seriously thinking about buying a Smithy 3 in 1 combo. The main reason is it come with some tooling that I will need to start out with and from what I read they have good customer support. Does any one have any knowledge, experience with the...

I have a CB-1220XL ( essentially a MI-1220XL). I was planning on ordering the Chicago bolt Smithy sells for mounting a QCTP. While I am paying the $11 handling fee is there anything else I should get from them? I know it’s a loaded question LOL.

Does any one have experience using an ER32 collet chuck in the lathe headstock? What did you buy?

inconsistent cuts when turning CB 1220 XL

Hey guys, picked up my first ever 3-in-1 smithy It's the CB 1220 XL. I paid 500 bucks for the unit, the bench and all the tooling. So i couldn't say no. I went through the machine and everything seems tight. I adjusted the gibs and modified the cross slide drive screw. I added two springs to the drive nut adjuster mechanism to help keep tension on the drive screw. This is helping a little but am finding it loosens after a bit of use. so i get play in my cross slide. I did add the AXO quick...

I have always wanted a lathe and came across this beat up 3 in 1 at an estate sale a few months back. Last weekend I decided to clean it up and it appears to work well. I know nothing about machining but look forward to learning. I did chuck up a pvc coupling and bored out the ID just to say I turned something. :)

Anyway can anyone help identify any of the tooling that came with the lathe?

Thanks

I've been wondering about how much effort I want to put into setting up the mill part of my combo. I'd like to see some of the work others have completed and maybe tell a little about your set up.

Thanks.

Added a DRO to my Granite 1324

Finally added a DRO to my 1324. The DRO is the Shooting Star device sold directly by Smithy. I also bought the installation kit, as I thought this would help with any installation issues. Unfortunately I ended up making or modifying most of the mounting hardware myself. I think my machine is a newer model, I just got it about 2 months ago, so not sure why most of the required mounting holes either didn't exist or were in the wrong place. Full detail on each axis below. Suffice to say, the...

Broken Bolton BT-800

I was trying to make some blocks to raise the vise up closer to the spindle so I could do smaller things, namely some valve and other work on my airguns. I cut a couple of 2.5" lengths of an old trailer hitch and was happily milling the second one down when one of the gib screws got caught on the ways for the carriage (not sure about my terminology here) and caused the carriage to sort of jump a little bit. This had happened to me a few times before and I should have rubber banded the...

Tearing down the smithy! advice on vfd while i'm in there?

Hey all, after using the smithy for this season and getting some good use out of the lathe I started to mess with the milling operations and i've determined..well, it sucks. Maybe it's not supposed to suck..but it does. I put a dial on my main ways and placed the indicator on the edge of my cross slide and moved it around..a good solid 5 thousands wiggle. This would explain why I couldn't make a straight pass on the milling machine to save my life. So i decided nows a good time for some...

Z Axis DRO on Bolton BT-800

Hello, I am curious to see some pictures or hear some advice on how to mount an igaging DRO to the Z axis on my Bolton BT-800 3 in 1 machine. This machine is identical to the Grizzly G9729, among others. I am guessing I am going to have to drill into the spindle or something? There is this plastic cover for the lower bearing, and I can mount to that I guess. I am not excited about the options I have thought about so far. I figured I would check with you all here before diving in. Thanks for...

3-in-1 lathe pulleys

Hello,

I have a Bolton BT800 3-in-1 combo machine. It is the same as the Grizzly G9729. I use it for hobby stuff and have enjoyed it reasonably well. I have mostly used it for milling stuff, which has it’s own issues, but this question is about the lathe. I have turned a few things on it, but I never had need to change the speed until yesterday. I can't seem to figure out how to tension the belts. Every time I try, I am able to tighten the bottom belt but this loosens the top belt. Is there...

Another Treadmill Motor Speed Controller conversion thread

Please move this ti a better thread if you want.

I have a Smithy 3 in 1 and I want variable speed.

Treadmills are often found in the FREE section of Craigslist and, well, now I have the motor from a treadmill.
It's a pretty common 130V 2.5HP motor.

I tested the motor with a variable power supply I have that only goes up to 24V. The motor is fine. I need to remove the balancer "pulley" to get a V-belt pulley on it. No problem there. I also need to find a way to mount the side-mount motor...

Hq400 drawbar question

I picked up a late 80s HQ400 3 in 1 and it only came with a couple of tools. I've been looking at Morse taper 3 tooling for the mill portion, and my options appear to be tang style and drawbar style.

There is a hole down the center of the milling spindle, but it's pretty small. M8 and 5/16s bolts fit, but the tooling ads I see show 3/8s and M12 as the common drawbar thread for MT3.

Am I going to need to make a special drawbar that will have to install from the bottom up instead of top...

Cross slide table setup

How do you have your cross slide table set up? Does the tool post and vise stay on there together or are you moving them and putting them on as needed? Is there any preferred location for either of them? Thanks in advance.
