DRO mounting on a Shop-Task

Anyone here put I-Gaging scales on a Shop-Task 1720? Pictures and advice would be appreciated. I think I have a pretty good idea of what I need to do, but am looking around to see if there is a better way or pitfalls to avoid.

Dials slipping?

Has anyone had an issue with their dials slipping? It has been an issue for me on a couple of projects where the dial does not turn accurately with the handle, so I will be off by a little bit. I have started holding the dial and handle together, but that's not 100% perfect. I just looked through the Smithy Granite manual, and do not see anything concerning adjusting the tension/pressure on the dials. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Be it ever so humble, here's my hobby area. Plus all the normal stuff we all need with buffers air compressor, and all the tooling needs. What we don't have we all make...right? Gotta move some stuff for space, but the area allows me to do my dinkin. Finally the boxed linear DRO mounted.

What have you machined and built with your 3 in 1? Pics?

Curious of what you 3 in 1 owners are able to do with your machine. Thanks

Riser block

I have a HF/CM 3 in 1. The mill is so far above the slide that it is useless without a riser for the vice or tool holders. Worse, I may need 2 or 3 risers of different heights. I am trying to find a couple 6 x 12 x 3 inch (and x 5 or x 6) blocks for specific vices. I can drill holes where I need them for the bolts. One option is to have blocks welded up and planed. But has anyone found a pre-made generic piece than can be repurposed?

Smithy CB 1239

I'm on the hunt for a Mill/Drill.I have been telling everyone I know, just in case somebody has one for sale.A friend told me about this guy that had a 3-1 and wants to sell it.I went and looked at it.How do I know if its a good deal? The Machine looks all there, but surface rust has started to grow on all the non- painted sufaces. There is a steel cabinet that comes with it that is full of do dads.Dial indicators, outside mics, cutters, several different size vises for the machine,parallels...

R8 6-spline spindle top to Pulley repair.

Afternoon gents! Had a quick repair job that I've seen some posting about in a few places . Splines that get play/backlash on the belt-pulley on the Z axis? My machine had 2 terrible backlash problems The first being a CNC ball-screw/quill up/down part strip. Then the spindle and spline w/ spline bore pulley slop causing a 1+ mm rotate slop.

those of you on the site know I went from zero knowledge on Milling to now. So about 3 or 4 months. Image may be NSFW.

3-1 shoptask

Looking for info on the shoptask 1720XM TC. I'm trying to find out any info on the 1720 gold series. If any one can tell me what normally came standard with this machine, threading gears tool post etc. Also have looked every where on the net and having a hard time finding op manual. Their site doesn't give much out on the older units. I'd like any pros or cons on these 3-1 machines if anyone has had experience with one. And last but not least, how much are they worth, I may have found...

Central Machinery/Harbor Freight Model 5980 3 in 1 upgrading

I see there is a lot of what looks like well deserved dislike of this machine but I got it cheap enough and it seems like the issues with it could be mostly fixed.

The lead screws/nuts are sloppy so they'll need to be replaced. The mill head could stand to be raised about an inch. Maybe adapt an existing thread cutter gear set.

Anyone gone through one of these and made a decent machine out of it? I really like the space saving aspect of it, I'll be doing small parts for a while and I'll...

Where to find replacement parts for my 3 in 1 AT300

I broke the tail stock lead screw on my AT300 (no-name manufacturer). It would be a quite easy one to fabricate, but someone threw the broken screw away, so I don't have amything to measure or look at to get the dimensions Image may be NSFW.

does anyone know of a place where they sell replacement parts like this? Or maybe someone would be so kind to me and measure your own and make me a drawing? I would greet the favour by making two screws and send one to whoever provided me a drawng Image may be NSFW.

Motors for Central Machine 5980

Recently came into a Central Machine 3 in 1 model T5980 for next to nothing. Wasn't really interested in the machine when I saw it, but wanted the tooling. Ended up with both for $100 and a bottle of Crown Royal.

Like a few others on this site, I'm patiently waiting for a Grizzly G0759 mill to come in sometime in October. So while I'm waiting I've been cleaning the 5980 and have taken an interest in it now.

The motor for the mill is smoked and the motor for the lathe sputters a couple...

H.F. 39743 (Also Known As AT-125) Multi-Purpose Machine Bearing Lubing

According to H.F.'s manual the lathe headstock and upright column bearings should be greased once a year. The drawings in the manual make it appear that the machine has to be disassembled almost completely to do this, and there are no instructions. What am I missing besides the money I spent several years ago when I bought it? Many thanks, I am an amateur.

Shoptask 1720 XMTC leadscrew shifter

I have a 1994 1720 XMTC that does not have the lead screw shifter that the later models had. Does or will anyone have pictures of how the shifter works? Shop-task/Shopmaster no longer sells the kit to add it. The shifter gives the ability to have forward reverse neutral on the lead screw. I think this would be a nice feature due to the fact there is no half-nut on these machines. I would like some pictures, experiences etc from someone who has a machine with it. Also does the shifter only...

Some new shopmaster cnc 3:1 activity over in cnczone

Just a quick note for the fellow shoptask/shopmaster folks. Some really interesting posts over at cnczonee shoptask forum recently. Had been dust for some time. Just passing along.

Harbor-Freight 3 in 1 Motors?

My Harbor Freight/Central Machinery Model 44142 3-in-1 lathe/drill/mill has a habit of blowing capacitors. My motor shop tells me I would be better off with a yankee motor (Baldor) [higher duty cycle] but the Chinese sheaves have a Metric bore. I've looked in catalogs but can't find comparable diameter sheaves to fit the Baldor shaft sizes.

I theory I could bore out the Chinese sheaves and install plugs with the right bore for the Baldor shafts, but I don't have internal keyway capability...

Intro on Shopmaster owner

Hello,
Just figured I would put up here that as of November I have 2014 Shopmaster patriot cnc 3-1. Have been using a Bolton 10-22 manual lathe and lms mini mill, Taig lathe as my main peices.
I purchased knowing the specs that would meet my requirements. But also figured there would be growing pains with a China build machine. And there have been. There has been excessive backlash which I have been dialing in via more rigid brackets and replacing some balls in the ball screws with more...

Shopmaster Mill-turn Any Input From Owners???

I am a renter and currently own an older Shop Task from 1996. I took the mill off the combo unit and chucked it years ago when I bought a Jet JDM18 mill with a power feed. I am moving about 200 miles and am tired of moving both the mill and lathe and the biggest complaint is the space constraints of the garages I usually rent. I am seriously considering the new mill-turn but I cant find any input from folks that have one. I use my lathe 90% of the time so the need to have two separates isn't...

Change gears for Smithy 3-in-1 AT-300

I broke a change gear for my Smithy 3-in-1 AT-300. I am looking to replace or fabricate a new gear but I don't know what the gear bore is called. Its a metric gear 1 mod 63 tooth, the bore is 15mm but it has 4 keyways at right angles that measure 4.75 mm wide (my 3/16 broach fits perfectly) by 1.5mm deep. Can anyone identify what type bore this might be?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Caster

3 in 1 machine, it leaks!

Several months ago I bought an older, 1992, Smithy in good shape with a bunch of tooling. Just got it set up and tested it last weekend. Seemed really noisy, the lathe and especially the mill. I did some disassembly, lubed the gears for the milling head and added oil to the headstock reservoir per instructions which leave something to be desired.

Anyway, I enter my shop today to see oil has started to seep out from under the machine. Is this normal for these critters? My first...
